2012 Merlot

2012 Merlot

The 2012 is a blend of Merlot (85%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (15%). It is fermented and then aged in French oak—33% new—for 18 months before being bottled in the spring, then bottle-aged for an additional 18 months before release.

"Densely structured, mixing deep fruit with mineral-tinged tannins. Aromas of currant and olive lead to firm flavors of bitter chocolate, cedar and herb." - Tim Fish, Wine Spectator

Tasting Notes
The 2012 shows wonderfully sweet-natured scents to contrast the tightly-coiled fruit and terroir notes so apparent on the palate. The nose offers focused aromas of sweet purple plum jelly, dried Bing cherry, licorice root, sweet vanilla, baking spices and developing hints of dark earth and black truffle. It is both plush and gripping in the mouth, which gives a racy texture to the deep plum and dried cherry fruit, while bringing focus to the hard mineral and dark spice flavors that support it. The finish is also sleek, but it’s ultra-long, despite the wine’s youth and structure. It will be truly grand by 2019 and is likely to live twenty years or more. 2850 cases produced.

Just popped my last bottle of the 2012 vintage. It's drinking so well I'm going to order more! So much life left in this wine. Plenty of juiciness on the nose and the palette along with tannins that are now velvety smooth.

Just wow. I did not expect this to be a high 90s type of wine. I've had a handful of Paloma merlot vintages, all outstanding. But this may be my favorite yet. It is certainly in it's drinking window. It has everything from earth and leather to bing cherry. Lots of fruit but some earth I'm not sure I've tasted from Paloma. Who know, maybe my palate was just at it's peak this night, but I'm saying somewhere between 96 and 98. Fortunately I'll be at the winery soon and I hope they have some left!
